The team at Gabi reviewed The Progressive Corporation: one of the United States’ largest providers of auto and home insurance, with more than 13 million policies.

Company Roots

Progressive was founded in 1937. By 1956, the company had established a niche of insuring more risky drivers. In 2016, Progressive had more than $20 billion in annual premium business.

Progressive has traditionally lived by its name: It was the first car insurance industry to launch a website, offer online purchases of new insurance policies, and to use smartphone apps to rate and manage policies. The company also offers Snapshot, a usage-based insurance program that allows drivers to save money on their car insurance by sharing their driving habits with Progressive. For instance, by opting to have a diagnostic tool installed on their dashboards, customers allow their driving data to be shared with Progressive. They can earn discounts for driving less often, in safer ways and during safer times of day.

Lines of Business

Progressive insurance offers Personal Lines, Commercial Auto and Indemnity. Personal lines includes personal cars and trucks, motorcycles, boats and RVs. Through its selected partners, the company also provides home insurance. The commercial auto sector focuses on insurance for businesses and the indemnity sector offers professional liability coverage for banks.

Progressive Insurance Client Reviews

Progressive customers give the company an average of three and a half stars out of five, according to WalletHub. While some customers said they had a difficult time getting a claim paid, others raved about Progressive’s affordable coverage and strong customer service.

“I’ve had Progressive Insurance since I began driving in 2003,” wrote one customer. “Originally, I chose Progressive because they were the first insurance company to let you apply for a policy online, but I’ve kept using them over the years because of their service. I’ve had three claims with them and zero problems. Plus, their website is still the best one out there.”
