The Travelers Companies is the third largest provider of personal insurance in the United States through independent agents. Travelers provides insurance products to both businesses and individuals in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Brazil.

Travelers insurance is sold through about 14,000 independent agents and brokers. The company generated revenues of about $29 billion in 2017.

Company Roots

Today’s Travelers Companies is a conglomeration of several historical insurance companies that have gradually been acquired or merged under the Travelers umbrella. Travelers was founded in Hartford, Conn., in 1864. The company got its name because its original purpose was to provide travel insurance for people traveling by rail, which was quite risky at the time. As the company grew, it focused more on property and casualty insurance and less on travel insurance, and in 1994, Travelers stopped offering travel insurance.

Over the years, Travelers purchased or merged with various other insurance companies. In 2004, Travelers merged with St. Paul Fire and Marine Insurance Company, which had operated in St. Paul, Minn., since 1853. St. Paul had acquired another large company, USF&G (United States Fidelity and Guaranty Company), in 1998. These two companies and other historic companies that are part of the Travelers group continue to write policies and accept claims in their own names, as they are wholly owned subsidiaries of the Travelers Companies.

Lines of Business

Travelers’ personal insurance lines include a broad array of property and casualty insurance products for individuals, including automobile, homeowners, umbrella, condominium, tenant, identity fraud protection, valuable items, boat and yacht, and wedding coverages. The company’s personal insurance products are distributed through a network of approximately 14,000 independent agencies, as well as a direct-to-consumer channel. Some employers also offer Travelers policies through employee and affinity agreements.

Travelers also offers commercial insurance for business customers, including international insurance and bond and specialty insurance.

Client Reviews

Travelers homeowners and auto insurance customers reviewed the company with an average of three and a half stars out of five, according to Consumer Affairs. Some customers complained about rising rates and customer service issues, but others said their experiences with obtaining Travelers coverage and managing a claim has been very positive.

Travelers staffers “are very friendly and personal,” one customer wrote. “My daughter was in a small fender bender and they called several times to make sure everything was alright and taken care of for both my daughter and also the person that she rear-ended.”
